Virtuozzo information at CheapVPS

Virtuozzo is virtualization software which maps operating systems function calls from virtual servers to one physical kernel. Virtuozzo is quite expensive commerical software done by company named SWSoft.

When running Virtuozzo on Linux all virtual servers must run same kernel. That kernel is specific kernel made by SWSoft. It maps kernel functions of one virtual server to specific user of physical kernel on real computer. VPS still might run different Linux distributions but with the same patched kernel Virtuozzo provides. Automatic updates of those VPS (using apt-get, yum or similar software) are possible by using custom repositories SWSoft provides for each particular distribution.

Virtuozzo is also available for Windows, and yes, there all virtual private servers must run same instance of Windows kernel, usually same version of Windows like, for example, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1.

Virtuozzo has very little overhead and some VPS I own runs almost fast as dedicated servers.

Some people claim that Virtuozzo doesn't allow fair share of resources but since all threads (processes) are mapped to original kernel it isn't completly correct. Still, Virtozzo doesn't allow complete fair share of resources but due to its low overhead mostly virtual private servers on it runs quite fast.

Bigger disadvantage of Virtuozzo is its price - it is very expensive commerical software so therefore VPS hosting on Virtuozzo might be more expensive than i.e. Xen VPS hosting or OpenVZ VPS hosting (although the former one is less reliable).
